Rishikesh is the best-known name in Indian yoga teacher training, and for good reason. Uttarkashi, further up the same Bhagirathi valley, is a quieter alternative. This is an even-handed comparison of the two for anyone choosing a 200-hour residential training in the Himalayas, including where each one fits and what to check before you book.
The Short Answer
Choose Rishikesh if you want the widest range of schools, easy access from Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport and a lively yoga community around you. Choose Uttarkashi if you want a quieter, less commercial setting where the training itself is the main event and your days are not shaped by a busy town.
The location matters less than the training. A strong Lead Trainer, a clear curriculum, supervised teaching and a sensible group size will serve you well in either place.
What Rishikesh Offers
Rishikesh has a long yogic and spiritual history and a large teaching community, with many schools, cafes, classes and visiting teachers within easy reach. It is straightforward to reach, and that convenience is why so many people begin their search there. The trade-off for some trainees is crowding and a tourist-oriented rhythm, which can make a focused, immersive month harder to protect.
What Uttarkashi Offers
Uttarkashi sits further up the Bhagirathi valley on the pilgrim road towards Gangotri. It is a smaller, quieter town in the Garhwal Himalayas, with a less commercial feel. Our campus is beside the river, in the Netala area, and the setting is chosen to support concentrated study. We wrote about the reasoning in Why We Chose to Leave Varkala and Rishikesh for Uttarkashi.
If a quieter Himalayan setting sounds right, see the dates, room options and fees for our four-week residential 200-hour training.

Getting to Uttarkashi
Most trainees fly into Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport, or travel to Rishikesh, and continue by road. The campus is roughly 155–160 km from either. Mountain roads and weather can affect journey times, so allow buffer time on arrival and departure days. Travel to and from Uttarkashi is not included in the training fee, but it can be arranged at additional cost. Our Uttarkashi travel and planning guide covers the practical details.
How to Decide
Ask yourself three things. Do you want to explore a yoga town, or be inside a training for a month? How much travel are you comfortable with on arrival day? And what do you want from the curriculum, a general foundation or one built around women’s physiology? Our residential programme is the four-week, 200-hour training described in the full curriculum guide, and it is designed around that immersion.
Whichever location you choose, check the same basics with every school: Yoga Alliance registration, Lead Trainer credentials, how teaching is supervised and assessed, group size, and exactly what the fee includes. The seven questions in our comparison guide work for any school, in any town.
