Planning Your Residential Journey to Uttarkashi

Students gathered in a circle at the Uttarkashi residential campus

Here is what we would tell a friend who was coming to stay with us — rooms, meals, the shape of a day, what to pack. Reviewed and updated as our residential programme details are confirmed.

1. Where Uttarkashi Is

Uttarkashi is a town in Uttarakhand, in the Indian Himalayas, in the Bhagirathi valley. It has long been associated with seekers, pilgrimage and contemplative study, and is generally quieter than major commercial yoga centres. Students typically reach it by road after arriving in Dehradun.

Travel time varies with route, traffic, weather and mountain-road conditions. We do not publish a fixed travel time, distance or altitude here — please confirm current details with our team.

2. How to Reach Uttarkashi

Dehradun is generally the main arrival point, reached by air or rail. From there, Uttarkashi is reached by road. Some batches may include or arrange a common transfer; inclusions vary by programme.

  1. Reach Dehradun.
  2. Follow the programme's reporting instructions.
  3. Join the common transfer if included or arranged.
  4. Keep sufficient travel buffer for mountain-road conditions.
  5. Confirm the exact meeting point with Stri Wellness before you travel.
We do not publish unverified taxi fares, bus schedules or guaranteed timings. Road and weather conditions can affect journey length.

3. Accommodation & Campus LifeWhere You Will Rest

Exact accommodation depends on the programme, venue and room type. Rooms may be private or shared; accommodation is intended to be simple, clean and comfortable, with some communal areas shared between students. This is a learning environment rather than a luxury resort, and quiet hours and shared-space etiquette matter.

We do not promise private bathrooms, constant hot water, heating, uninterrupted electricity, uninterrupted high-speed internet, mountain views from every room, or luxury facilities unless confirmed for your specific programme. Always review the specific programme page for current venue, room category, inclusions and facilities.

4. FoodThe Rhythm of Shared Meals

Meals are vegetarian, served at regular timings, and intended to be nourishing and practical — supporting daily practice, using seasonal and local ingredients where available.

We cannot always guarantee every allergy or strict medical diet can be accommodated. Students with allergies, medical dietary requirements or strict restrictions should speak with our team before enrolment.

5. Yoga Hall & Learning EnvironmentWhere Practice and Study Meet

Learning covers asana, pranayama, meditation, lectures, practical demonstrations, practicum, discussion and supervised teaching — a mix of indoor sessions and weather-dependent outdoor learning.

11. Uttarkashi FAQs

Why did Stri Wellness move away from Varkala?
As our teacher trainings became deeper and more disciplined, we found ourselves wanting a more immersive, distraction-free residential setting. Varkala gave Stri Wellness a beautiful beginning, but the coastal, tourist-oriented rhythm was no longer the best environment for the intensive learning our programmes now require.
Why did Stri Wellness not choose Rishikesh?
Rishikesh carries deep spiritual and yogic history and a large, active teaching community. We considered it seriously, but felt it was too busy for the quiet, intimate learning environment we wanted for our residential trainees.
Are residential programmes in Kerala stopping completely?
Yes. Stri Wellness is ending residential teacher trainings in Kerala. Uttarkashi is now the chosen residential home for our teacher trainings and selected immersions.
Is Uttarkashi a separate learning format?
No. Uttarkashi is where our Residential format is held. It is part of the Residential format, not a separate delivery mode.
Are all Stri Wellness programmes held in Uttarkashi?
No. Only the Residential option of each programme is held in Uttarkashi. Most Stri Wellness programmes also offer Live Online or Self-Paced Online formats.
Is Uttarkashi suitable for beginners?
It can be, depending on the programme and your personal readiness for a structured residential schedule. Speak with our team about which training and format suits your experience level.
Do I need to be a yoga teacher to attend?
No. Some of our residential offerings, such as the Yoga Training for Women Practitioners, are designed for dedicated practitioners as well as teachers.
Is accommodation included?
Accommodation details depend on the specific programme and venue. Please review the relevant programme page or speak with our team for current inclusions.
Are meals included?
Residential programmes generally include vegetarian meals as part of the residential experience. Exact inclusions vary by programme — please confirm with our team.
How do students reach Uttarkashi?
Students generally arrive in Dehradun by air or rail and then travel onward to Uttarkashi by road. Transfer arrangements vary by batch — our team will share exact instructions after enrolment.
Is internet available?
Connectivity in Himalayan terrain can vary. We recommend not relying on constant high-speed internet access during your residential stay.
Can international students attend?
Yes. International students are welcome at our Uttarkashi residential trainings, as well as in our Live Online and Self-Paced Online programmes.
What is the best time to visit?
This depends on the programme dates and Himalayan seasonal conditions. Please check the specific batch dates and speak with our team about seasonal travel considerations.
Is Uttarkashi better than Rishikesh or Kerala?
Not universally — they serve different intentions. Uttarkashi is our choice for quiet, structured residential teacher education. Rishikesh and coastal destinations like Varkala remain valuable for different kinds of travel and practice.
